Former Roanoke firefighter indicted on more child sex charges

More charges for a former Roanoke City fire department lieutenant already in jail charged with a child sex crime. The Commonwealth’s Attorney in Botetourt County confirms David Bocock was indicted Monday by a grand jury on nine new charges, including two counts of rape.

Fan Saves Boy From Getting Struck by Flying Bat at Pittsburgh Pirates Game

A boy at a baseball game was nearly struck in the face by a bat Saturday after it slipped from a player’s grip and went whizzing through the air. Luckily, the young spectator was shielded from the blow by a nearby fan who reached out and deflected the flying bat.

Firefighter’s quick reflexes save his son at Braves baseball game

A Marion County Fire Rescue captain’s quick reflexes saved his son from serious injury at a spring training baseball game on Saturday. Since then, photos of the Shaun Cunningham’s quick response — blocking a flung bat from his 8-year-old son’s face — have gain a lot of attention on social media and in the news.

The radio strap (more commonly known in my department as a purse) first started to make its appearance in my agency about 10 years ago.  It is an available, yet not required, piece of equipment that the majority of my department chooses not to wear.  In some circles it is incredibly belittled, and personally, I heaped my share of ridicule upon individuals who wore it. Somehow I ignorantly overlooked the fact that its use would have stopped the aggravating occurrence of my radio falling out of my damn chest pocket.

Several occupants of an apartment complex in Lanham were rescued from their balconies Tuesday morning after fire spread through their building. Emergency crews responded to the fire at around 6:30 a.m. on the 9900 block of Good Luck Road.
