The firefighter who suffered a fatal heart attack while fighting a fire at a commercial building on Sunday night was remembered by fellow firemen as an devoted volunteer always willing to help.
Robert Meyer, 54, of Union Beach, worked as a UPS driver and joined the Belford Engine Company in Middletown in 1979, where he is a life volunteer. He later joined the Union Hose Fire Company in Union Beach in 2005.
A Monmouth County community is mourning the loss of a volunteer firefighter who died while fighting a massive fire in Union Beach.
Robert Meyer, a member of Union Hose Fire Co. #1 in Union Beach, collapsed outside the burning building Sunday evening. An autopsy showed he died of heart attack, according to the office, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
