A historic E. Maple Street home that had been transformed into seven separate apartment units was destroyed by fire Sunday afternoon, leaving five Holly families displaced, and causing officials to look into what may have caused the devastating blaze.
Located at 415 E. Maple St., the home was built in the late 1800s by one of Holly’s forefathers, John Baird, past president for the Holly Historical Society, Linda Smith said.
Holly Fire Chief, Steve McGee said the fire is believed to have begun around 11:30 Sunday morning, and most likely originated in the basement. McGee said “balloon construction,” a method of building typically used in the late 1800s, made fighting the fire particularly difficult.
