Firefighter Death: Columbia, MO Lt. Bruce Britt Dies after Collapse at University of Missouri Apartment Complex

Columbia fire Lt. Bruce Britt, a 23-year veteran of the department, died Saturday morning while responding to a walkway collapse at a University of Missouri apartment complex.

Britt suffered fatal injuries while assisting residents at University Village, 601 S. Providence Road, Columbia Fire Department Battalion Chief Brad Fraizer said in a news release. Britt was pronounced dead at University Hospital.

Firefighters were in the process of evacuating the building due to a partial roof collapse when an exterior walkway collapsed and pinned the firefighter. The firefighter was transported to University Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The identity of the firefighter has not been released.

A Columbia firefighter died Saturday morning responding to a walkway collapse at a university apartment complex.

The Columbia Fire Department said in a news release that an unnamed firefighter “suffered fatal injuries on the scene of a structural collapse” at 601 S. Providence Road, the location of the University Village apartment complex. The firefighter was pronounced dead at University Hospital. The news release didn’t detail his injuries, and said his name is being withheld pending family notification.

In the chancellor’s statement he says, “I am deeply grateful to City of Columbia firefighters and University of Missouri Police Department officers for their rapid response to the incident that occurred early this morning at University Village Apartments. Because of their quick and effective response, no residents were injured, and all are being moved to alternate locations.”

A firefighter was fatally injured after a balcony walkway at an MU-run apartment complex collapsed early Saturday morning.

Shortly after 4 a.m., the floor of the second-story balcony walkway at University Village apartments collapsed at one of the buildings near the southwest corner of Providence and Stewart roads.
