A West Virginia community is mourning the loss of a firefighter, who died in the line of duty.

Malden firefighter John Appleton collapsed at the scene of a fire on Happy Hollow Road in Sissonville Monday afternoon. He was taken to the hospital, where he died.

The community and firefighters from around the state are now mourning the loss.

John Appleton was 62 years old, and a veteran member of the Malden Volunteer Fire Department. Like many times before, he suited up to help fellow fire crews put out a house fire Monday. Sadly, it turned out to be the last fire call he’d ever respond to.

The Malden fire house is draped in black, and the flag flying at half staff, as the department and community mourn the loss of firefighter chaplain John Appleton.

“It was pretty hot, and he was ready for action. He’s a pretty good firefighter. We’ve done this a long time, and been through a lot together, so it’s pretty close to his family. They’re all coming out to help right now,” said C.W. Sigman, Kanawha County Fire Director.
