Lt. Kevin McRae was the Lt. on Engine 6 who was first due to the fire at a 2 alarm apartment fire in the 1200 block of 7th Street, NW. Lt. McRae collapsed after exiting the building and went into cardiac arrest. Crews on scene began CPR on McRae and he was transported to Washington Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
McRae was 44 years old and survived by his wife and 3 children. DC’s last LODD was McRae’s cousin, Techician James McRae III, who died on July 7, 2007.

A D.C. firefighter has died in the line of duty.
Two firefighters were taken to Washington MedStar Hospital after fighting a blaze at a downtown high-rise Wednesday morning.
A spokesperson for D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser confirmed Lt. Kevin McRae died after collapsing at the fire. Bowser is at the hospital, as firefighters hold hands in prayer outside.
McRae’s family has been notified.
The fire was located in the 1300 block of 7th St NW, according to DC Fire and EMS. Fire showed from the top floor of the 9-story apartment building, according to DC Fire Fighters Local 36 on Twitter.
Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services said it was providing mutual aid at the scene.
Red Cross volunteers are helping residents displaced by the fire.
Three other people were also injured and taken to the hospital.
In addition to the McRae, another firefighter and two residents of the building were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Tim Wilson, a spokesman for D.C. Fire and EMS.
Fire crews were called to the 1700 block of 7 Street about 8:10 a.m. Wednesday.
