According to WAND Reporter Doug Wolfe, firefighters responded to the fire at 8:23 Tuesday morning. Reports from viewers near the scene say that fire departments from Sullivan, Arthur, Mt. Zion, Windsor, Mattoon, and Bethany are working to combat the flames, with Mt. Zion and Sullivan departments using aerial ladders to pour water from above.

With the Vista FD's main engine, Engine 141, out of service, they are forced to respond with only a 2 man engine. The 2 firefighters on the engine began stretching 150' of 1 ¾ attack line. While they were stretching out the hose, the power lines from the house fell to ground making the stretch very difficult and making the firefighters dump the hose they had and begin to flake backwards towards the engine.

Personnel at FS311 are very well versed and experienced in Vertical Ventilation and Truck Company Operations. While vertically ventilating, crews take burn time and building construction in mind. This particular home was of "conventional" construction, which relies on roof member size and strength, with 1''x12'' roof coverings. This method of construction is a Firefighter friendly construction, and allows firefighters to be aggressive, yet knowing a good solid roof is below them. Newer homes are of a lightweight construction, and rely on trusses to make strength. These homes are not FF friendly, and can be very dangerous with even a short burn time.

At 11:22 pm, while E814 was just arriving on the scene of the Abingdon Fire, the JMVFC was requested to assist the Aberdeen Fire Department (AFD) at a townhouse fire in the 1400 block of Wellspring Drive, Aberdeen. Units from the AFD arrived with fire showing from the roof of a 4-story middle of the group townhome. Harford County’s busiest hook and ladder truck, JMVFC truck 831, arrived two minutes later. Firefighters placed ladders at windows and the aerial ladder to the roof.
