You should read the story. FDNY hasn't willingly opened its doors to felons. As a matter of fact, the city's notice to applicants still states that convicted felons "are not eligible for appointment to this position."

Why in the hell do we have such strict regulations like clean driving records, no convictions, no drug use, random drug tests...How come we are held to a higher standard only to be replaced by some convicts. I will tell you why. We are held to a higher standard because we are firefighters. We have to be trusted by the public. We cannot afford to have our citizens worrying about whether or not they can trust us. We are firefighters...not convicts.

I am currently working on a story and one of the intriguing details is that a current firefighter WAS a convicted sex offender. The person was pardoned and is not a registered sex offender. The offense was bad (they all are). The offense happened 30 years ago prior to the current laws that protect us from these criminals. Should he be allowed to be a firefighter?
