The MH-53E Sea Dragon helicopter went down in the Atlantic 18 nautical miles east of Cape Henry, Naval Air Forces Atlantic told WAVY.com. Five people were onboard the helicopter when it went down – four people were recovered and taken to Sentara Norfolk, according to WAVY. One of the people recovered was confirmed dead around 1:40 p.m.
(CNN) — One person was missing after a Navy helicopter carrying a crew of five made an emergency water landing off Virginia Beach during a routine training operation, the Navy said Wednesday.
The four rescued crew members of the MH-53E Sea Dragon were taken to a hospital; their injuries were not immediately known, the Navy said in a statement.
A 25-foot response boat was sent from Little Creek and another crew from Cutter Shearwater as well as two MH-60S helicopters from Helicopter Sea Combat Support Squadron Twenty Eight (HSC-28) are assisting. Hill said the Shearwater was about two miles away from the crash site.
Virginia Beach fire crews were also assisting the search.
Kafka said two MH-53 Sea Dragons belonging to the HM-14, a helicopter squadron based at Norfolk Naval Station, were on a training mission. One of the helicopters had to make an emergency landing into the water at approximately 11 a.m.
The second helicopter dropped a raft into the water and two of the crew members made it into the raft. The water temperature is about 42 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.
