Social Media Classes

Rhett Fleitz, the author of  The Fire Critic, offers teaching and consulting on social media use in the fire service.

So far this year (2011), I have taught classes at the Fire Department Instructors Conference (FDIC) and for Kean University in New Jersey.

The class offered at FDIC and Kean University in 2011 was titled “Social Media: The Fire Service’s Next Big Innovation”. I have plans to adjust this class and offer a new class in 2012 as well as this class.

What I have learned is that many firefighters realize the need and benefits of using social media, however they are weary of some of the stories they have heard. I can show how your department, organization, locality can benefit from using social media.

Teaching – I am available to teach classes on social media. Whether it is at a conference or for your department, I can create a class that will work for you.
Consulting – I am available to consult and/or create a social media presence for your department as well as teach members how, when, and why to use it.

Through the creation of a dynamic web site (blog), the use of facebook and twitter as well as many other social mediums Fire Departments can connect with their community and members in ways never possible before. Making themselves accessible to their audience (taxpayers, legislators, members, and visitors) can be a huge part of a positive public relations campaign.

This day in age, firefighters must open up and allow interaction through social media to help educate their community of what they do…because after all, most people just think we just fight the occasional fire and sleep!

The Fire Service has so much to learn about Social Media and its use…
