A district fire chief said recent layoffs nearly led to tragedy and got a stern rebuke from the city manager in internal emails reviewed by WCPO Tuesday. "We narrowly averted tragedy," District Fire Chief Pau Lolli said after it took more than 25 minutes for all of the necessary crews to reach a fire at the Super 8 motel Sunday night.

Instead of giving me hope, the doctors tried to take my hope away. They told a 14 year old boy that he could never be the one thing he dreamed of since as long as he remembered, a firefighter. I continued trying. The next year and a half was spent sitting on the sidelines at training.

Being a firefighter was always my dream, and now, helping others understand that diabetes never has to hold you back from what you want to do in life, has become a passion.

I never told the other firefighters in my department about my depression. I was afraid they would see me in a different light if they knew how depressed I was before joining. I would rather not be treated differently because of it. No one is alone. Even if they choose to keep it to themselves, as I have done until now, they’re not alone. Never. That’s something I’ve learned.

What the fire service needs to know is when and where to get help...either for themselves or for others. It is OK to get help!

Memphis firefighters and retirees are in a fight for their benefits. The City of Memphis has decided to stop paying insurance for their firefighters. Basic Plan Family premiums will rise from $320.05 per month to $921.90; an annual cost of $11,062.80. Premier Plan premiums rise from $334.32 per month to $1,328.19; an annual cost of $15,938.28.
