Kilted To Kick Cancer on Facebook

284591_261306733880784_791835_nKilted to Kick Cancer, a grassroots charity founded in the Bay Area, is back to raise awareness for male specific cancer during
September, Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. The goal of the campaign is to encourage men to take control of their health and get screened
for cancer. For the entire month of September, the participants in this movement will be wearing kilts everywhere they go. Walk into a
room in a logo T-shirt, folks might notice. I’ve never asked a man WHY he was growing a mustache, but when a guy in a kilt walks into a
room, EVERYONE notices.

KTKC uses that attention to bring up an uncomfortable subject: Cancer. With the help of Alt.Kilt, a custom kilt maker, Co-Founders
Jason Hoschouer, Justin Schorr and the rest of the Kilted Army are taking the topic by storm through the likes of social media, particularly
Twitter and Facebook. Kilted to Kick Cancer’s awareness message was championed by Paramedic, author and blogger Kelly Grayson
(http://ambulancedriverfiles.com) who issued an online fundraising challenge. Readers and bloggers have raised over $50,000 for Livestrong,
Prostate Cancer Foundation and other local research groups over the last 3 years.

“When a man walks into a room wearing a kilt, every one has the same question… what’s he got on under there?” said Jason, a law enforcement officer, kilt wearer and kicker of cancer. “We are not ‘Skirted to Kick Cancer’ these are the real deal. Our aim for September is to bring as much awareness to male-specific risk factors for prostate and testicular cancer as we can. What better way to get the attention of others than through kilts?”

According to the Prostate Cancer Foundation and American Cancer Society, prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer in America, affecting 1 in 7 men. The older a man is, the more likely he will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. A man with a father or brother who developed prostate cancer is twice as likely to develop the disease, but early detection and treatment, including diet and exercise can make an incredible difference.

“1 in 36 men will be killed by Prostate Cancer. If buses were killing 1 in 36 men we’d find a solution. Everything goes Pink in October, and for good reason,” said Justin Schorr a Firefighter and Paramedic when not kilted, “The NFL will go pink without mentioning that the men wearing it are at risk themselves. Our goal is to talk to as many men as we can and get them to get their butt–pun intended–to the doctor. If they won’t listen, we’ll talk to their wives, mothers, girlfriends, anyone who holds sway with them.” The 2 Co-Founders recently recorded a video where they encourage participants in the ice bucket videos to “Get Kilted! Get Checked!”
