Perfect Example of Poor PPV Placement

FC Note: The fire occured back in March, but was just posted on YouTube.

This video below shows a perfect example of poor positive pressure ventilation placement. This video is a little tough to critique because it is hard to tell where hoselines are operating inside, when they are operated, and where they went in at.

The house is getting plenty of horizontal ventilation due to the wind. That is obvious. The fan is just messing up that natural ventilation being placed at the front door, where smoke is pouring out. The PPV fan is merely impeding the natural ventilation and actually working against the firefighters inside if there are any working in there. In the very beginning of the video there it appears that they might be putting water on the fire if you read the smoke, however I could be wrong.

In this fire, the fire should be attacked from the back door side C of the house. With all that natural ventilation, it should be pretty decent getting to the fire. If needed you could add in some PPV.

One other thing….When working on the roof you should always be operating with SCBA!!!

Description: 11:30 27 Mar 09 ….Red Oak Fire Dept was called out to a House Fire at 901 Lowell Ave in Emerson. All occupants of the house had evacuated and were safe, no injuries at this time. Red Oak Fire was assisted by Hastings Fire Dept and Emerson Fire Dept .
